How we handle it
Just moved in, lost a key, or have a lock that's never worked right? We rekey existing locks so old keys no longer work, repair and replace deadbolts and door hardware, and install new locks for your home or business. "While he was here he fixed a dead-bolt door lock that never worked properly," one reviewer noted. That's the kind of all-in-one service we bring on every visit.

Rekey or replace, and how to tell
Rekeying changes the pins inside the cylinder so the old keys stop working. The lock stays on the door and it is far cheaper than new hardware. It is the right answer after a house move, a tenant change, a breakup or a lost key.
Replacing makes sense when the hardware itself is worn, the finish has gone, the door has dropped and the latch no longer lines up, or you want a higher grade of lock than what is fitted.
One key for every door
If you are carrying four keys for one house, they can usually be keyed alike so a single key opens the front, the back, the side gate and the garage service door. It is done at the same visit as a rekey and costs very little on top.
Where that is not possible, usually because the locks are different makes, we will tell you what it would take rather than quietly leaving you with four keys.

More projects

- I have just moved in. What should I do?
- Rekey everything. You have no idea how many copies exist or who has them, and rekeying is the cheapest way to make every one of them useless.
- Rekey or buy new locks?
- Rekey if the hardware is sound, which it usually is. Replace if it is worn, the finish has gone, or the latch no longer meets the strike properly.
- Can all my doors use the same key?
- Usually yes, if the locks are compatible. It is done during the rekey and makes a real difference day to day.
- My deadbolt sticks and is hard to turn. Is that a repair?
- Often yes. Sticking is usually the door or frame moving rather than the lock failing, and adjusting the strike is a far smaller job than new hardware.
