Can I still use the door?

Please do not. With a broken spring the opener is lifting weight it was never built for, and a door part way up with a failed spring can come down hard. Leave it down and call.

Why replace both when only one broke?

Because they have done identical work. A new spring paired with a worn one unbalances the door and you end up paying for a second visit shortly after.

How long does it take?

A straightforward pair is usually under an hour once we are on site, and we re-balance and test the door before leaving.

Can I replace one myself?

We would strongly advise against it. Torsion springs hold a great deal of stored energy and winding one without the correct bars is how people get seriously hurt.

The springs do the lifting, not the opener

A garage door can weigh anywhere from 130 to over 300 pounds. The opener is only there to guide it. The springs carry the weight, which is why a door with a broken spring feels like it has suddenly gained a few hundred pounds, and why the opener will burn itself out trying to lift one.

Torsion springs sit on a bar above the door, extension springs run along the tracks either side. Both are wound to the specific weight of your door, which is why an off the shelf spring is not a fix.

Why both get replaced together

Springs are rated in cycles, and a pair fitted on the same day have done the same work. When one goes the other is usually close behind, and replacing a single spring leaves a new one working against a tired one, which pulls the door out of balance.

Replacing the pair costs less than two separate call-outs a few months apart, and the door ends up balanced rather than nearly balanced.
